Break the (Fashion) Rules!

Fashion is all about experimenting; it’s a form of art and finding your sense of style. There are so many so called “rules” to fashion and I’m here to tell you to forget them! Do what you want with your style to express yourself.

Rules to break:

  • Don’t wear white after labor day: In the early 1900s, white attire was reserved for vacation wear and Labor Day marked the end of summer. After Labor Day, people returned back to school, work, etc. and switched out their wardrobes for darker hued clothing. This rule can definitely be ditched now because white looks great anytime of the year. Hellooooo winter white is a thing for a reason!
  • Mixing prints can be too busy: One of my favorite things to do is to mix prints. The easiest way to achieve the look is to have the same base color in your pieces and have one larger print and one smaller one.
  • “Classics” have to be expensive: Classic or good quality does not always mean expensive; spending more money does not guarantee better quality. Being educated on how things are made and how to properly care for them will ensure that your items last over time, no matter the cost. Dropping tons of money on clothes every season is not always favorable, but there are some retailers that carry designer pieces for much less. There are also some fast-fashion stores like Zara and H&M where you can find some great quality, timeless pieces such as wool overcoats, leather boots, cashmere sweaters, and silk blouses at very reasonable prices.
  • “Dry Clean Only” means dry clean only: Many brands will put “dry clean only” on their tags to keep up with their higher-end stigma. The fabric content is typically on that same tag inside of your clothes; you can look up care/cleaning instructions for that fabric to see what’s recommended. Most can be put in the wash with the rest of your clothing or hand washed and air dried. However, for some fabrics, it is definitely better to have dry cleaned so that they don’t get ruined and/or shrink, such as wool.
  • You should always match your shoes, bag, and belt: Don’t be afraid to mix things up! Matching all of your accessories can look very dated and matronly, so try some pops of color or print to give your outfit a fresh and modern look.
  • Faux fur and Faux leather are tacky: So many retailers have increased the quality and look of their faux fur and leather that it can be hard to tell the difference now. With many people being more socially conscious, brands have paid attention and gave us some great options to have these leather and fur looks without it looking cheap and no animals involved.
  • Jeans should be washed as much as your other clothing: Many denim brands suggest washing your jeans every 3-10 wears, depending on how active you are in them. If you’ve been doing manual work while wearing your jeans, you’ll probably want to wash them more often than someone who wears jeans working at a desk.
  • Never mix metals: Mix them all! Different metals compliment each other when you make it look deliberate. The easiest way to do this is by stacking up your bracelets in varying metals (gold, silver, and even rose gold) and widths. You can do the same with rings too.
  • The men’s section is only for men: You don’t have to feel limited to solely shopping in the women’s section. Go venture over to the mens department for some oversized tops, cinch in your waist with a belt and add some biker shorts and you have a whole look.

Rules to follow:

Look for pieces that go with multiple items in your closet. Mixing and matching within your wardrobe creates an array of outfits. Working with a similar color scheme can help with this because most of your clothing would be able to be paired with many items.

Wear clothes that fit and flatter.

When you’re stuck trying to figure out what to wear, wear black. Black will never go out of fashion. You can do an all black look and shake it up with a colorful handbag or pair of shoes. Now you look chic without even trying.

The one rule you absolutely have to follow is – Don’t be afraid to be yourself! Confidence in yourself and your style is key! As long as you’re feeling yourself and your look, that’s all that matters! I want to hear what rules you’re going to break, let me know below!
