Honestly, some of us could use some type of mini celebration just to get a break from everything going on with the world right now. Halloween is around the corner, so why not have a small soirée with your friends (covid style of course) and pretend to be someone else for a night? Whether your have a cocktail party, scary movie night, or just hang in the backyard around a fire pit, being around a few friends having a good time could be just what you need. You may not have even considered thinking of a costume this year, but here are some last minute ideas using what you may have in your closet and minimal shopping.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s: There are two looks you could do from this, one is the classic little black dress, pearls, long black gloves, and a mini crown. The second memorable look is the white button down, with a sleep mask and tassel ear plugs – or earrings would be an easier find. (side note: this is one of my favorite classic movies). I already had most of the items for these costumes, but I did run to Icing by Claires to grab a few pieces. I picked up the mini crown, the gloves, and the tassel earrings.

Rosie the Riveter: This one is super simple. Grab a pair of jeans and a denim shirt with the sleeves rolled up and add a red bandana around your head.
Wednesday Addams: I actually did this a couple years ago for work. A knee length black dress either with a collar, or wearing a white collared shirt under, is the main item you need for this costume. Putting your hair in two braids with a part down the middle while maintaining a solemn facial expression is what makes it really obvious that you’re portraying Wednesday.

Morticia Addams: Morticia is another easy costume by wearing a long floor length black dress, a bright red lipstick and to add a little touch with a red (or black) rose.

Clueless (Cher or Dionne): Their iconic looks are the matching plaid skirt suits with a purse and cell phone in hand. The main difference between the two characters looks is the color of the suit and I don’t think many people have a lot of yellow plaid hanging in there closets, so I did the Dionne version. While this is not a suit, it still gets the job done with the black and white plaid jacket and skirt. Add a red sweater, black purse, over-the-knee boots (or knee high socks and black shoes) and hat. If you happen to have an old cellphone, don’t forget to add it to finish off your look.

Spice Girls: My faves are Scary Spice and Posh Spice, but I always have to go with Scary Spice for a costume. Many of her looks featured cheetah print and gold/metallics, natural hairstyles, and platform shoes. Last year, I actually wore this as a last minute costume when a friend called me to get drinks Halloween night.
Hogwarts Student: I love Harry Potter, so of course I had to add this costume. There are a few options for this depending on what’s in your closet, the main thing to tie it all together would be if you have an old black graduation gown. I wore a gray plaid skirt with a white button up top and a Ravenclaw (that’s my house!) tie that I found at Target for $5. You could also wear a black skirt or pants and a black sweater over the button up.

Men in Black: A black suit with a white button up top, sunglasses, and a silver pen to act as your “neuralyzer” is all you need for this costume.

Hat/headband & makeup: These can be as simple or elaborate as you want. If you get cat ears, you can use some eyeliner on the tip of your nose and draw some whiskers, or you could do a full face of cat-like makeup. It’s all up to you on how invested you are in your costume. There are so many different (and inexpensive) halloween headbands around to choose from such as a bee, angel, unicorn, witch (with a headband or hat), or even alien.
Hopefully some of these ideas help with your last minute costumes. I know if I do end up having some plans for Halloween, I’ll be choosing from one of these cute costumes from my closet! Let me know which ones are your favorite and what your go-to last minute costume is! Until next time!
xo,
